Mural Apprentice Opportunity

The mission of The South Omaha Mural Project is to strengthen communities and improve lives through the process of painting a series of murals about the various ethnic groups that give South Omaha its unique diversity and history.  Visit our web site at southomahamuralproject.com to see our previous murals about the history of South Omaha, Our Lithuanian, Polish, Croatian and Mexican community murals and our plans for future community art. This year’s project is the painting of a mural about the Irish community.  It will be on Donohue’s pub at 33rd and L.

In partnership with the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance, the Nebraska Arts Council, the City of Omaha Historical Fund, the Omaha Irish Cultural Center of Omaha the South Omaha Mural Project is offering one individual a unique opportunity as an apprentice on a community-based mural project in South Omaha during the spring of 2018. This apprenticeship offers direct hands-on experience in the execution of a major public artwork. The Community Mural Project will be guided by award winning muralists Richard Harrison, Mike Giron and Rebecca Harrison.  The apprentice must make a commitment to the project over the sping to attend community meeting and paint at least 80 hours total on the project over the course of May and early June.  They will receive $1,000 compensation. The South Omaha Mural Apprentice Application Deadline is July 25th and the Apprentice will be announced the next day.  Responsibilities include: • Commitment to working approximately one and a half months onsite • Willingness to learn about murals and the selected community • Attendance at and participation Assisting volunteers • Speaking with visitors and the press • Arriving on time in order to set up at the beginning of the work day • Willingness to clean up at the end of the day • Running errands as needed.

  1. Applicant Background: Provide a concise description of your skills. Be sure to highlight those that would be particularly useful for this project (for example: working on ladders). 2. Applicant Capacity and Project Management: Describe any creative projects or community organizing you have undertaken. Highlight the ways in which those experiences could apply to this project. 3. Long-term Impact: Describe your interest in being an apprentice on this project and how it may affect your future creative endeavors. Be sure to highlight not only your interest in the art form, but also your opinion of public art. 4. Short-term Impact: Describe the ways in which work/home/school schedules will allow for a onemonth commitment to this project. Be sure to list any known scheduling conflicts for May and early June. Let us know how you plan to get to the job site or if you need a ride. 5.
